Frequently Asked Questions - The PC Detective Pro

  1. Ive downloaded TPCD.MSI but can't install it.
This is usually caused because your PC hasn't got the latest Microsoft Installer update installed. This can be downloaded from the Microsoft website by clicking on the relevant link below. This will open a browser window showing you what you are about to download.

  2. I get an error that the logger is not setup when used over a network.
This is probably because you have access restrictions enabled in windows or you haven't got file sharing enabled with full read/write access to the logger PC.

    To enable file sharing:
    Double click My Computer
Right click on the C: drive icon and select Sharing
Give the PC a name and enable full read/write access to the machine
    File sharing is now setup
This should be done on all the logging machines if used over a network.

Access restrictions can be another cause if using the NTFS file system. (Most XP/2000 and NT systems).
You must enable read/write access to your windows folder and log folder (the default log folder is "c:\Programme files\tpcd").

To enable access to these folders double click My Computer
Double click your C: drive icon
Right click on the windows folder and select Sharing and security.
Click the Security Tab at the top.
Click Add under groups or user names
Type Everyone in the Enter the object names box and click OK
In the Permissions for Everyone click Allow Full control and click OK
Do the same for Program Files.
This will allow full access to that machine from the viewer.

  3. I am able to view screen captures in real time across a network
This is usually caused by either the two machine having different dates or the date formats are different on the Logger and Viewer.
To set the date/time double click the time in the bottom left hand corner of your Windows desktop and set the time/date.
    To set the date format:
Click Start / Settings / Control Panel
    Double click Regional Setting
Click the Date tab and set the Short date formats the same on all machines. ie dd/mm/yyyy or mm/dd/yyyy.

  4. I cant setup the Viewer over a network?
The most common cause for this is either because of your access restrictions are wrong which if so then please see the note above "I get an error that the logger is not setup when used over a network"

It may also be cause because the Viewer PC hasn't got the loggers drive mapped. To map a network drive:
    Double click My Network Places
    click View workgroup computers
This will list all available network machines
To map a drive double click a machine listed and it will list the available shared items on that machine
Right click on the Boot Drive icon (This will be the name you shared the C: drive as)
    Click Map Network Drive
Select a drive letter to map to and click Finish
The PC is now mapped as a drive letter.
