What are ID3 and WMA tags?

ID3(mp3) tag represent information (like Title, Artist and more) embedded into the file itself and are used to correctly identify your music. You can take advantage of them when you want more details about the song, when you are playing it on your computer, CD or DVD player, portable MP3 player or even one of the new car players that can read MP3s. This way you can say goodbye to "Track 01" and the like.

ID3v1 format is old but still very popular. The first reason of this is that they take very little space (last 128 bytes of file) and are easy to work with. The problem is that each of the 6 fields is of fixed size and you can't expand the tag in any way.

ID3v2 introduced unlimited tag size and dozens of different tag fields called frames. This format was created with streaming in mind, that's why the tag is located at the beginning of files. Unlike ID3v1, the fields can contain any text and there are no limits on the number of characters in each field. Winamp currently supports some of v2 fields.

WMA tag has the same basic functionality. The information is located at the beginning of the WMA (Windows Media Audio) file for streaming.

Frequently Asked Questions - eMusic Tag Editor

  1. Can I set the same tag fields to many files?
Yes, select several files and edit one of them.

  2. What happens if I rename files using tags with blank fields?
The field name will replace missing information. Say, you rename files using the "Author - Title" format and a file has no title, the text will be just "Author - " so you can easily replace missing information by hand if necessary.

  3. Why is the bitrate of my file a weird number?
It's probably a VBR mp3 (variable bitrate). In these files the bitrate changes constantly.

  4. I changed the clock date or values in the Windows registry and my trial period is over.
Trying tricks with the system clock or registry keys will not extend your evaluation period but may end it immediatly.
