Opening DBF files

To open a DBF file, click File | Open menu, or click the corresponding icon on the toolbar. In the file opening dialog box select the file(s), use Ctrl and Shift keys for multiple selection.

Each opened file adds a new tab under the toolbar displaying the file name; click the tab to view the desired file.

At the bottom of the window view the following information:
  • The number of records in the file
  • Size of the file, in KB
  • Last modification date
Creating New DBF file

To create a new DBF file, open File | New menu.
New DBF file dialog box opens.
  • To add a new field, fill in Field, Type, Size, and Digits, and click the New field button.
  • To delete the field, click Delete.
  • Use arrow up and down buttons for ordering the fields
  • Select the type of the file in File Type drop-down list below.
On completing, click OK. In Save As dialog box specify the file name and click Save

Modifying file structure

To modify the fields of the DBF file, click File | Modify menu.

Fill in the following fields:
  • Field - type in the name of the field
  • Type - select the filed type: Character, Numeric, Date, Logical or Memo.
  • Size - select the length of the field
To rename a field, double-click the corresponding line in the Name column.
To set field size bases on max field length click "Optimize" button.

Viewing satistics

To analyze statistics for the file, click View | Statistics menu, or click the corresponding icon on the toolbar.

The table with data contains the following fields:
  • Name - the field name
  • Minimum, Maximum, Average, and Sum - corresponding statistical data for each field.
Deleted records below shows the number of deleted records in the file.

To print the report, click Print.

Import/Append records

You may add records to the DBF file from a text file in either TXT or CSV format, or from another DBF file (in case the names of the fields coincide in both DBFs).

To append a text file, click File | Append menu. Append from dialog box opens. Select the Field delimiter: Comma, Tab, or specify another delimiter.

Optionally check options boxes. If you choose ZAP before append records, all records from your original file will be removed. Otherwise the records from the text file will be added after the last existing record.

Save As/Export

You may export your dbf file to a variety of formats.
To save/export a DBF file, open File | Save as/Export menu, or right-click and select Export to command, or click the corresponding icon on the toolbar.
Select the location and format of the exported file and click Save. The available formats are: DBF, Text , PRG, CSV, XLS, RTF and HTML. Export to dialog box opens
  • Select the fields to be exported and specify their order using up and down arrows.
  • Select a field delimiter for the resulting table (only for text/csv files)
