Using the Program

To select files or folders for conversion, drag and drop them from the folder or file listings on to the Files to convert box. If you select folders, the program will convert all files in the selected folders which can be converted. Any files selected which cannot be converted will be ignored. You may select one or more files and remove them from the list by clicking the Remove button, or clear the whole list by clicking Clear button.

PDF Converter identifies convertible file types by their extension. The default extensions for files which can be converted to PDF are:

  • Microsoft Word: DOC
  • WordPerfect: WPD
  • Rich text: RTF
  • Microsoft PowerPoint: PPT

On the Options tab, you may add additional extensions, as explained below.

For conversion of PDF files to text or extraction of images, the program assumes an extension of PDF for the source files.

To convert Word files, Word must be installed on the computer. To convert WordPerfect files, WordPerfect must be installed. To convert PowerPoint files, PowerPoint must be installed. To convert Excel files, both Excel and Word must be installed. Please see the section below headed Notes on Converting Excel Files for additional information on Excel.

After selecting files and folders and setting the desired options, simply click either Convert to PDF, Convert PDF to Text or Extract Images from PDF to start the conversion. As files are converted, they are added to the Converted files listing. When the conversion is complete, the status bar will display a message with the number of files converted. You may select a file in the Converted files box and click the View button to view the file. For PDF files, this will open the file in Acrobat Reader. Text files will be opened in the default application for the TXT extension, which is usually Notepad. Images are extracted as JPG files and are given the same name as the PDF file plus a three-digit sequential number. For example, if you extracted images from a file named MYFILE.PDF, the images would be named MYFILE-000.JPG, MYFILE-001.JPG, etc.
