Lux 5.2 - User Guide and FAQ

The Rules Of Lux

The object of Lux is simple. You must destroy all your enemies and take over the world.

The Beginning Of The Game
Most maps have a starting scenario in them. If you use the starting scenario then the intial countries and armies that everyone starts with are pre-determined. If you choose not to use the scenario then countries and armies either be given out randomly, or selected by players in turn.

Taking Turns
Once the initial setup is finished players start taking turns. This continues until the game is over. Each player turn is made up of a number of phases. They are (in order):

     Cards phase
     Placing armies phase
     Attack phase
     Fortifying phase

Cards Phase
On every turn that you take over at least one enemy country you are given a card. The very beginning of your turn is when you have the opportunity to cash in a card set for some more armies. A set is made up of three cards either with all the same symbol on them or with each of the three symbols on them. As well, if you own the country that is pictured on a card when you cash a set that includes that card you will be given two bonus armies on the pictured country. There are a number of preference items having to do with cards that can be set in the preferences window.

Placing armies phase
At the start of each turn you receive an income of armies to add to your forces. The base income is calculated in the following manner: (the number of countries that you own) / 3 then rounded down with a minimum of 3. On top of that, you are given bonus armies for any continent that you fully own at the start of your turn. You can see the bonus values of each continent by selected 'Show Continents' from the Board menu. (On randomly generated boards the continent bonus value will always be the number of countries in the continent).
You get to decide where you want your income of armies to be placed. Generally you should both place in order to defend your weak borders as well as in anticipation of where you want to attack that turn.

Attack phase
The real fun comes in the attack phase. This is where you get to conquer the world. To start attacking click on a country that you own. It will start to flash, indicating that it is the selected country. Now click onto and neighboring enemy country to perform an attack on it. When you take over an enemy country you get to choose how many of your armies to move into the newly aquired territory and how many will stay in the country that the attack came from. When you have finished placing all the armies then the attacking continues.
When you are finished attacking, you can either click the Fortify button to enter the Fortifying phase, or just click the End Turn button if you do not wish to do any fortifying this turn.

Fortify phase
During your fortify phase you are given the option of moving your armies between adjacent countries that you own. Click on the country that you want to fortify from, and then click on the country that you wish to move them to. Each individual army may only be moved once during the fortify phase.
Click the End Turn button when you are done fortifying, and the cycle of turns will continue.
