Composing an animation

The image you compose is created from multiple animated GIF files linked together:
Load the animation clips into the Animation List using the Add Clip button.

Clicking the Add Clip button will open an Open file dialog box, locate the animated GIF file you wish to import on your local system and click Open to load. Repeat this step until all your clips are loaded into the Animation List.

Organize the clips within the Animation List using a combination of the Move Up, Move Down, Remove and Remove All buttons.

If you plan to create a file that loops, to ensure a smooth loop add the first clip also as the last clip in your Animation List and make sure the frame numbers are sequential.

Select a clip from the Animation List, the clip name and number of frames will be displayed in the Clip Properties, edit the Start Frame and End Frame values to only use a portion of the original imported clip, to increase or decrease the playback speed of the clip set the delay value between frames in seconds using the Delay setting.

Select a Transition from the Animation List, the Transition is used to link one clip to another clip. Using the Cut transition a new clip will begin immediately following the last frame of the preceding clip. To smoothly transition from one clip to another use the Dissolve transition, this will overlay the 2 clips fading out the old as the new fade's in. Setting the Length value determines how many frames the two clips will overlap, the Delay value sets the delay between frames in seconds.

When using Dissolve with a length of 6, the last 5 frames of the preceding clip will overlap the first 5 frames of the next clip so you need to increase the clip frame number accordingly to get an animation sequence to match.

During composition you can preview your composed image at any time using the Preview function. This is located in the top left corner of the Composer Window, this is very useful for checking that transitions from one clip to another are very smooth.

When previewing you can Play, Stop, Pause, Previous Frame, or Next Frame. This allows you to view your image in real-time or to step frame-by-frame through the animation. You can also select to Play all clips or only the clip currently selected in the Animation List. By checking the Preview Loop checkbox the playback will loop indefinitely.

The Timeline at the bottom of the screen shows a graphical representation of the composed image. Each Clip and Transition added is displayed, the length in frames of the total composed image is displayed at the end of the timeline.

Once you are satisfied with your composed image, click the Save button. This will open the Save As dialog box. Select a convenient location on you system, enter a name for your file in the the Filename box, and then click Save. If you want the composed image to loop indefinitely you should check the Loop checkbox prior to saving the file.

To view your newly composed file locate it on your local system using the Windows File Manager and double click it to open, this will launch your default .GIF file viewer.

Frequently Asked Questions - Effect3D Studio

  1. During installation "error: RPC.STUB incompatible, install will now terminate".
This appears to be a common problem caused by Microsoft releasing a new dll that is not compatible with Win98. Some developers have made an installer which includes this dll, thereby destroying your system.

  2. Where or how do I access the bonus model packs ?
Due to the file size, and for your convenience the bonus model packs are split into downloadable files approximately 10MB in size.

  3. Error Message: "Error during initializing direct draw".
The most common reason for this error is due to the host system running in 256 color mode. Effect3D must be run in High color (16bit) or True color (24bit) mode. This can quickly and easily be changed in the display settings found in your control panel.

If this does not solve your problem, ensure you have the correct or most recent video card drivers installed for you display adapter. Refer to your display adapter manufacturers information for updates regarding Direct draw support.

  4. Can I add 3D animated objects or text to my 2D graphic files?
Yes, you can import a 2D image as the background of your project, this allows you to apply animated 3D objects or 3D text on top of your images.

  5. Can I import and animate 2D graphic files in 3D?
Yes, you can import a 2D image with a 3D photo frame or you can apply the image as a texture map onto an existing 3D object. These can then both be animated in the same way as any 3D object.

  6. Can I add 3D object and 3D text in the same scene?
Effect3D Studio is not a multi-scene environment, this means you can only have 1 3D object in the scene at a time. You cannot have both a 3D object and a 3D text object animated in the scene.

You can apply an object to the background allowing you to add multiple 3D objects, however only the last 3D object can be animated. For more information about Linear Editing view the downloadable reference guide.

  7. Where can I get more 3D models to import?
There are many hundreds of sites on the Internet that offer free 3D models & objects.

  8. What is a custom animation?
Some 3D models contained in the model archive are supplied with an inbuilt customized animation sequence. These animation sequences are designed for and can only be applied to the specific model. For instance the "Electric fan" model has a inbuilt animation sequence that spins the fan blades and rotates the fan head.
