How to import from files...
1. Extracts an icon from ICL, IL, NIL, EXE, DLL, CPL files and many other file types for subsequent editing.

2. Converts an image file or a part of an image file to an icon. Supports the following formats: BMP, DIB, EMF, GIF, ICB, ICO, JPG, JPEG, PBM, PCD, PCX, PGM, PNG, PPM, PSD, PSP, RLE, SGI, TGA, TIF, TIFF, VDA, VST, WBMP and WMF.

Step 1: The "Import from" dialog box opens; choose a file format in the selection box; go to the folder where file is located; click its filename. If you select an image file, the image will be displayed in the preview box. If you select a file that is not an image file, all icons inside the file will be extracted and listed in the preview box.

Step 2: Double-click the filename or click the "Open" button. Another dialog box will open.



For image files:

Drag out a rectangle to select a part of the image to convert. The part you select will be displayed in the preview box.

Choose an icon size from 16x16 through 80x80, or use a custom size (from 1x1 to 255x255). Resize the image selected or let it remain in the 1:1 scale.

Also, you may click these buttons: "Paste from Clipboard" - gets an image from the clipboard;
"Copy to Clipboard" - copies the selected image to the clipboard;
"Open" - opens another file;
"Reload" - reloads and refreshes the image;
"All" - converts the entire image to an icon;

"OK" - to finish the conversion.

NOTE: The "Custom Size" function is disabled for non-registered versions of IconCool Editor.

For non-image files:
Click on an extracted-icon to display it in the preview box.

Also, you may click these buttons:
"Copy to Clipboard" - copy the selected icon to the clipboard;
"Open" - open another file;
"Reload" - reload all extracted icons;

"OK" - finish the operation.

Frequently Asked Questions - IconCool Editor

  1. How do I capture an image from the desktop or other software?
    1. Click the Capture Tool button in the Tools Bar, or choose the "Tools -> Capture Tool" menu item;

    2. Minimize the main windows of IconCool Editor; any image that your mouse points to will be displayed within the Preview Window;

    3. Press the Ctrl key. When you hear a Bell sound, the image displayed in the Preview Window has been captured. Now return to the IconCool Editor;

    4. A dialog box will appear, asking whether you wish to paste the captured image into the Editor Area. Answer, "Yes".


  2. How do I convert an image file into an icon?
    1. Choose the menu item "File -> Open"; Choose file formats in the selection box; locate your file in the folder.

    2. Double-click the filename, or click the "Open" button. Another dialog box will open. Drag out a rectangle to select a portion of the image to convert. The portion you select will be displayed in the preview box.


  3. How do I extract an icon from a file and edit/replace it?
    1. Choose the menu item "File -> Open"; Choose file formats in the selection box; locate your file in the folder.

    2. Double-click the filename, or click the "Open" button. Another dialog box will open. Click on an extracted-icon; it will be displayed in the preview box;

    3. Click "OK" button to return to editor.

    4. After editing or replacing the extracted-icon, choose "File->Save Back..." to save it back.
