  1. Select the GEDCOM file which is to provide the data for the report.
    Optional features include:
    - Unknown names may be standardized. When this option is selected, all undefined last names are reported as "Unknown" and all unknown forenames are reported as "Mr.", "Ms." or "Mr./Ms.".
    - Names may be recased. When this option is selected, the upper and lower casing of names is adjusted for the report. "john MCDOE", for example, will be reported as "John McDoe".
    - Last name prefixes may be standardized such that they are reported with the prefix before the family name (e.g., "van Gogh") but sorted and indexed with the prefix following (e.g., "Gogh, van").
    - Indices of occupations, places and dates may be prepared if they are required to be included in the report. - Data fields specified as "Unknown" or "Private" may be ignored and not reported.

  2. Select the last name and first names of the individual who is to be the subject of the report. All subsequent processing is performed with this individual as the basis.
    Select the connection breadth:
    - "Direct Only" has a similar scope to an Ahnentafel report.
    - "All Relations" includes all genetic connections up to the distance limit (if specified). The distance limitation excludes distant cousins from the analysis.
    - "All Connected Individuals" also includes indirect connections via marriage and adoption. There is no distance limit. The scope may be restricted such that an indirect branch does not lead to further indirect branches.
    - "All Individuals" also includes individuals recorded in the GEDCOM file which have no connection to the subject.
    Optional features include:
    - Restriction of the number of ancestor and/or descendant generations to be analysed
    - Inclusion or exclusion of additional names of an individual.
    - A report of processing exceptions.
    - The preparation of family tree diagrams for inclusion in the report.

  3. Select the sections that are to be included in the report. If there are indirect relationships, the branches that are to be included or excluded are selectable. Select the scope of the report: ancestors only, descendants only, or all generations.
Select the report order: ascending (latest first) or descending (earliest first) generations.
    Optional features include:
    - Front page subtitle: e.g., "Prepared by A. N. Other"
    - Inclusion or exclusion of narrative components (relation descriptions, ages at events, etc.)
    - Page headings, page numbers, font type, font size, etc.
    - Inclusion and reporting of source data.
    - Positioning of source and note information (as section, within narrative, or as specified).

  4. Select the book format options required. These are normally selected when printing a report as a two-sided book. For large reports, it may be convenient to have the Family Trees section printed last, as a separate volume.
Select the output destination. PDF is recommended as this provides the ability to preview the report and to reprint selected pages if a printer error should occur. The margins are adjustable, and an offset adjustment is available for duplex (two-sided) printers that might not perfectly align each of the two printed sides of a sheet of paper.
A size estimator is available to calculate the approximate number of pages that the report will contain. This can be useful for determining whether to produce the tree charts as a separate volume.

Frequently Asked Questions - Pocket DVD Wizard

  1. How do I obtain a GEDCOM file?
From whatever program you use to maintain your data. Virtually all programs that create and maintain family tree data either use the GEDCOM format or provide the ability to export the data from the program to a GEDCOM (.ged) file. The export facility is commonly found under the File or Tools menu. If you use one of the web-based methods for maintaining your family tree (such as Genes Reunited or phpGedView), these too provide the ability to download the data as a GEDCOM file on your computer.

  2. Is there a limit to the size of GEDCOM file that The Complete Genealogy Reporter is able to process?
An unlimited number of individuals and families, limited to reporting maxima of thirty children per family (limited to the first fifteen in tree diagrams), and twenty-five partners or spouses per individual. However, very large files will (i) take a longer time to process, and (ii) require a considerable volume of paper if all individuals are to included in the analysis.

  3. Does the PDF output file include embedded fonts?
Not by default, because PDF files with embedded fonts are about 1.25 megabytes larger. However, if you need to create a PDF file with embedded fonts (for example, to transmit to www.lulu.com), you may select the option to do so via the "PDF" Options.

  4. How are cousin relationships calculated by The Complete Genealogy Reporter?
There is a choice between two methods:
The simpler, "symmetrical", method is the one more commonly used nowadays. With this method, the distance between the two individuals is one less that the smaller number of generations traversed back to the common ancestor, and removal is the number of generations separating the two individuals. Thus if the common ancestor were to be your great-great-grandfather (four generations back) and my great-grandfather (three generations back), we would be second (one less than the lesser of four and three) cousins, once (one generation apart) removed.
The "asymmetrical" method is more formal, but rarely used nowadays. With this method, the distance between the two individuals of different generations is different for each to the other and is one less that the number of generations traversed back from the person viewing the relationship to the common ancestor. Removal is the number of generations separating the two individuals, as with the symmetrical method. Thus if the common ancestor were to be my great-grandfather (three generations back) and your great-great-grandfather (four generations back), you would be my second (one less than three) cousin, once (one generation apart) removed, and I would be your third (one less than four) cousin, once removed. In other words, the cousin distance is calculated "horizontally" based upon an individual of the same generation as the person viewing the relationship to the other, then the "vertical" removal factor is applied.

  5. Dates in my GEDCOM file are not being interpreted correctly. What can be done about this?
The Complete Genealogy Reporter contains rigorous date processing logic which will correctly interpret almost all reasonably expressed Gregorian date data. The Complete Genealogy Reporter also contains date conversion routines for Hebrew, French Republic, and Julian dates. Nevertheless, you may select that dates be reported exactly as they are found in the GEDCOM file. If you email the support address with an example of a date which the date processing logic was unable to interpret appropriately, we will investigate expanding the date processing logic to handle that date format appropriately in the next release.
