Frequently Asked Questions - Handy Address Book

  1. How do I print labels or envelopes for my holiday cards?

There are a a variety of ways to accomplish this, but you'd better use "Categories":

    1. For each address that you want to send a holiday card to, add that contact to the "Holiday Card" category. To do this, edit the address, and choose the "Categories..." button on the bottom of the address editor. Place a check mark next to the "Holiday Cards" category to add this contact into that category. Another method to add multiple contacts to a category at once is to select all of them from the list, and then right mouse click and choose "Categories...".

    2. Once you've added all the appropriate contacts to the Holiday Card category, choose the menu command "View / Categories...". Set the options so that only the "Holiday Cards" category is being displayed. Make sure the alphabet bar along the left is set to "All". You should now see only your contacts displayed that you intend to send a holiday card.

    3. Now, choose "File / Print" and select either the Label or Envelope "Print Style".

    4. Under the "Print Range" choose "Displayed Addresses".

    5. Choose "Page Setup" to adjust any printing options. Once you're done, press the "Print..." button to go back to the "Print" dialog.

    6. Press "Print Preview" to preview the print job, or press OK to actually print.

  2. Why aren't my address sorted by name anymore?

You can sort the list by any displayed field in the list view. You can see which column is controlling the sort order. The column controlling the sort order has a small triangle in the column header. To change the sorting to be by name, just click on the "Name" column header, and that will sort the list by name. Click on it again to toggle between ascending/descending.

  3. How do I enter company names in the "Name" field?

When entering a name into the "Name" field in the Address Editor dialog Handy will try to parse the name into First, Middle, and Last pieces automatically. In the case of entering a company name you usually do not want this behavior. Instead, you can use the Name Details dialog to enter the full company name into the Last name field, leaving the First and Middle names blank. To open up the Name Details dialog from within the Address Editor, just click the little "..." button to the right of the Name field.

  4. How do I backup my address book?

To backup your address book, just make a copy of your .abk address book file:

    1. Determine the location and name of your address book file you want to backup. Look in the title bar of Handy Address Book to see the name of the address book you are currently using. The default address book when you first install Handy is called habook.abk, and is located in the folder where you installed Handy. By default, this would be C:\Program Files\Handy Address Book\habook.abk.

    2. Make a backup copy of this file using Windows Explorer or whatever other file copying program you prefer. To use Windows Explorer go to "Start / All Programs / Accessories / Windows Explorer". Browse to your address book file, select it, and use "Edit / Copy". Browse to where you want to back it up to, and use "Edit / Paste".

  5. How do I transfer my address book to a new computer?

There's not anything special to this, just install the program, and transfer your book(s):

    1. Download and install Handy on your new computer. (Don't forget to enter your license under "Help / Register..." after you install it.)

    2. Copy over your address book(s) from your old computer to your new one. A Handy address book is a file with the *.abk extension. You can see the current address book in use by looking in the title bar of the program. If you've never created a new address book, the default address book is "habook.abk", and is located in the same folder where you installed Handy. (This is usually "C:\Program Files\Handy Address Book".) To make sure Handy isn't using any address books you may be trying to copy, it is usually a good idea to exit Handy using "File / Exit" before doing any address book copying.
