LinkStash 1.6.16 - User Guide and FAQ

Screenshots - More Details

Bookmark Passwords

There are many websites that require you to login to access the site. These include web forums, news websites, financial websites, etc. This can become a nightmare to maintain. With LinkStash, you can manage not only bookmarks, but passwords too.

It should be pointed out that LinkStash does not fill in forms for you, neither will it enter your user name or password details automatically. It is your responsibility to do that. The strength of LinkStash lies in the security and the authentication processes used to gain access to sensitive data.

You can view and maintain all your passwords either as individual bookmarks, or in one central place, through the Password List Dialog. The password feature is so useful, you may find that you are using it to keep track of non-website related passwords.

LinkStash not only stores passwords securely using encryption, it can also retrieve the password information from the bookmark and type it for you.

Viewing and setting up a bookmark password

To view or set up a bookmark password:
  1. Right-click on the bookmark and choose Edit Bookmark Properties.
  2. When the Edit Bookmark Properties dialog appears, click on the Password tab.
  3. If you are not currently signed in, click the Sign In button.
  4. Enter data into any of the fields: User name, Password or Custom Text, or click the Help button in the dialog for more information about the various fields.
  5. Set the Security level you require. This determines when, or if, you need to sign in to use the password. For now, set it to Low.
  6. You can now do either of the following: To accept the changes and remain signed in, Click OK. Or, if you want to Sign Out, click Apply, click Sign Out and finally click OK.
Retrieving and using a password

To use a password from a bookmark:
  1. Visit a website by double clicking on a bookmark (one that has a password set up.)
  2. When the web site appears, click in the text box where you would normally type the user name.
  3. Press the hotkey to enter the user name. The hotkey can be customized to anything you like (within reason), but the default hotkey is Ctrl+Alt+1. To change the default, see Options: Hotkey.
  4. If you are not signed in, you will be asked to Sign In.
  5. The user name is entered as if you had typed it at the keyboard.
There's more than one method that LinkStash uses to determine the password for the website. To change the way passwords are handled, see Options: General. For example, you can set it up so that when you press the hotkey to send the password, LinkStash examines the current URL in Internet Explorer. If LinkStash finds a matching bookmark, that bookmark's password details are used. This means, for passwords to work, you do not have to open the website by double clicking a bookmark in LinkStash, you can type the URL in to the Internet Explorer address bar, or click on a Favorite, and just press the hotkey.
