Frequently Asked Questions - Lightning Download

  1. Installing
    After you have the .EXE file, just run it from Windows. (If you already have installed Lightning Download, you do not need to uninstall it, just install the newer version over the older version.)

    The setup program will ask you some questions to guide you thru the setup process.

    If you wish to have a simpler interface with many of the more advanced functions hidden, pick the "Basic" mode when asked in the Setup program. Unless you have special needs, you should accept the default values for all the other items.

    Once Lightning Download is installed and running, you should have an a Lightning Download icon in your system tray.


  2. Starting Downloads
    Just use your web browser as usual.
    Lightning Download adds into your web browser (Netscape Navigator and Microsoft IE 4.0 or higher) so that starting downloads with Lightning Download is as easy as clicking in your web browser. When you click on a file to download, Lightning Download will take over and show its own "Save As" window and Download window.

    Tip: Some sites do things differently so may not work quite as transparently with Lightning Download. If there is a file that Lightning Download is not catching, try holding the CTRL and ALT keys down when you click the item in your web browser. That will tell Lightning Download to do any file.


  3. Resuming Downloads
    If a download stops for any reason, you can easily resume it with Lightning Download.

    If the download window is still showing on your screen, just press the "Resume" button (See Right) and Lightning Download will continue the download.

    If the download window is no longer showing (such as if your computer has been shutdown), just double-click on the Lightning Download Logo in your Windows tray icons to open the Download Manager window. Then double-click the download from the list of all your downloads to resume it.


  4. More Advanced Features
    Nearly all of the more advanced features are available from either the Download Manager (to get there, just double-click on the Lightning Download Logo in your Windows tray icons or the Configuration window (to get there, just right-click on the Lightning Download Logo in your Windows tray icons, and pick "Configuration" from the menu).

  5. Can I put a link to Headlight Software from my web site?
    Yes (and feel free to use any of the images or animations here or from the Lightning Download web site too.)

  6. Can Lightning Download scan files for viruses?
    Lightning Download lets you choose to use whatever virus scanner program you want. You may select the program to use on Lightning Download's "Advanced" configuration page.

  7. Click monitoring doesn't work on a specific web site. Why?
    Sites which use CGI re-directs to files can confuse Lightning Download. Try holding CTRL and ALT when clicking the link you want if it isn't working automatically. This will force Lightning Download to try and download the file.

  8. Click monitoring in Internet Explorer stopped working.
    Upgrading Windows (or other things) can over-write Lightning Download's settings. To fix: on the Monitor configuration page in Lightning Download (or "Web Browsers" page in the Wizard), uncheck the box for monitoring of Internet Explorer, then click OK to apply the changes, then go back and re-check the box. That will fix this in most cases.
