Frequently Asked Questions - EaseUs DataRecoveryWizard

  1. What is data recovery?
Data recovery is the procedure used to recover data from a variety of media and operating systems that has been lost by either hardware failure, human error, software bugs, a virus or a natural disaster. The media could be hard drives, backup tapes, CD media, Compact flash cards, floppy diskettes or any other types of digital media where a possible data loss situation exists and normal modes of accessing the data are no longer possible.
Your data can become inaccessible due to a software problem, computer virus, mechanical or electrical malfunction or a deliberate human act.

  2. Why is data loss prevention so important?
Data Loss can spell total disaster. A study by the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington D.C. showed that if a disaster causes companies to lose their data for 10 or more days, 50% of them will file for bankruptcy almost immediately following the loss, and another 43% will file for bankruptcy within a year.

  3. How can I prevent data loss?
Backup, backup, backup. The key word here is Backup. The reality of hard drives is that they are going to crash sometime. It is not a question of if, but when. Nothing can prevent data loss better than performing routine backups of all your data. Users can save hours, days and weeks of downtime by minimizing their data loss through routine backups. A good anti-virus software package, updated regularly, will also offer some protection against data loss.

  4. How often should I back up my data?
Backups should be performed on a regular basis. The frequency of your back ups will depend upon the maximum acceptable amount of work that would be lost in the event of a catastrophic failure.
While data backups would seem to offer an effective shield against threats, backups do not always provide comprehensive data protection. That is because the data backup plans developed by many companies are not fully realized or, worse yet, not followed. What is more, individuals often fail to test the restore capabilities of their backup media. If the backups are faulty, a simple data loss can quickly become a data disaster. Finally, even if backups are successful, they only contain data collected during the most recent backup session. As a result, a data loss can potentially rob you of your most current data, despite your backup attempts.
The best policy is to backup all of your critical data every 24 hours. This is the only way to ensure your latest work is fully backed up should you ever need it.

  5. Can I recover my data after performing FDISK, Pqmagic or Super Fdisk?
Even if your partitions have been deleted with FDISK, you can use 'AdvancedRecovery' and select a physical drive scan from DataRecoveryWizard and recover the data from the lost partition.
Furthermore, even if you have created new partitions after removing old ones, you can still recover your data using the DataRecoveryWizard.

  6. What kinds of viruses are protected against by the DataRecoveryWizard counter measures?
DataRecoveryWizard is effective against viruses such as CIH, that initialize the file system information including MBR and FAT. Furthermore, DataRecoveryWizard can recover data attacked by viruses that alter the directory entry information such as WormExploreZip. These powerful features are implemented in DataRecoveryWizard - [Lost Files] category.
The WormExploreZip virus destroys the entire directory information and FATs, thus completely eliminating file information, extension, and file size data. Consequently, only the data area remains unaffected. Even in these extreme cases, DataRecoveryWizard provides a miraculous recovery result.
DataRecoveryWizard cannot recover data damaged by viruses that directly attack a file data area.

  7. Can I use DataRecoveryWizard to recover data if my hard drive is not recognized by the BIOS of my computer?
No, if the BIOS does not recognize the hard drive, our software is unable to perform a recovery. Please make sure that the connections, jumper settings and controllers are ok. If the hard drive is still not recognized, try to connect it to another computer and see if it gets recognized there.

  8. Can I use DataRecoveryWizard to recover data from CD's, CDR's and DVD's?
No, DataRecoveryWizard is a software for hard drives, floppy drives, USB Flash drives, Memory Sticks, Smart Media, Compact Flash, Secure Digital and Multi Media Cards only.
