DiscSafe 2.0 - User Guide and FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions - DiscSafe

  1. Do I have to format a CD-R or CD-RW prior to data storage?
No, that isn't necessary! DiscSafe writes direct to your CD-R(W) and no in the so-called UDF format that requires special drivers! The data backup with DiscSafe uses, for security reasons, the trusted ISO9660 format that also makes backup media usable with various platforms.

  2. I always receive error messages during data backup, what should I do?
The most frequent cause for errors are incorrect drivers and/or older company versions of the CD recorder. DiscSafe works with its own ASPI drivers but if they were de-selected during installation of the program, at least standard ASPI drivers are required - and they should be the latest version if possible.

If you installed parallel to DiscSafe, an older version of the burning software WinOnCD by the company Roxio (formerly CeQuadrat), incompatibilities can occur. Being the possible error source, the UDF software PacketCD should be de-installed and both driver files c2rec.vxd und c2aoix.vxd (located in Windows\System\Iosubsys Directory) should be removed from your computer or moved to another directory. Please note that this could possibly impact the functionality of WinOnCD. In the rule, however, both mentioned files can be removed without consequences.

  3. How frequently should a backup occur?
That really depends on the importance of your data. Companies should always backup once a day and sometimes even lunch hours are used for a second backup. Please note that all data that is to be stored, cannot be used actively at the same time. We recommend, therefore, termination of all other applications prior to data backup.

A rule of thumb as follows:
    • Data, that is modified frequently, should, therefore, be backed up frequently. In this way you minimize the risk of possible work loss.
    • For unimportant data or data that is modified seldom (for example, the membership list of the local bowling club), less frequently backups are sufficient, sometimes even, only two backups per year.

In the end you have to decide for yourself how important the data is to you! Using DiscSafe in any case, you have the possibility of storage in accordance with your requirements ...

For total security reasons, you should create several backups of the same files and store them decentralized, for example, private data in the office and company data at home.

  4. What file systems besides FAT 16/32 or NTFS are supported?
Basically all file systems are supported as long as Windows can read them!

  5. Can directories from net drives also be stored?
Basically yes - as long as they have been mapped (they are connected to a local computer). Be sure to always store directories and files from the net with assistance of an image! Please only copy under special circumstances directly from the individual network drive to the CD/DVD recorder. As a rule the data transfer rate within networks are not stable enough and, therefore, crashes frequently.

  6. The following error occurs during installation: Error 1324. The folder path "Internal Files" contains an invalid character. What should I do?
The error message points to a corrupt user account, most of the time in Windows XP with Office 2000 or Office XP. Solution: Delete the user account(s) and establish it/them new. After the deletion, check to ensure that the sub-directory for the user account(s) in Documents and Settings has (have)actually been deleted. If not, it has to be done manually.

  7. By failure of a burning process, the drive remains blocked.
After restarting your computer, the drive should be available again. Alternatively, you can try to free the drive with a right mouse click on the appropriate icon in the work area and by selecting the entry Remove.
