The "Preferences window" is used for setting various properties of the program, such as: choosing the behavior on inserting large images, setting default comments and delay time, selecting color reduction method and color of working background in the Frames area (environment).

The "Insert large image modes" area hives you a choice of default behavior while inserting images that are larger than your animated GIF canvas. It includes the following options:

shrinking the size of the inserted image to fit your animated GIF canvas size;
enlarging your animated GIF canvas size to match the inserted image;
asking you for a correct action each time the inserted image is larger than the animated GIF canvas.

The "Color reduction method" area provides a choice of five methods used by default while adding new frames to your animated GIF. These methods are Nearest Color, Floyd Steinberg, Stucki, Grey Scale, and Netscape Palette.

By clicking the "Change" button at the "Environment" box, you can set the new background color for the "Frames" area of the main window.

The "New animation defaults" set the default comment text and display time for each frame of your animated GIFs.

How can I access earlier created animated GIF?
Use the 'Add frames' button and locate your earlier saved animated GIF file. When you click 'Open', the whole file is added to your new GIF as the same sequence of frames. You can edit it and save under the same name as your earlier created GIF.
What is the difference between Color reduction and Optimization?
1. Color reduction methods are applied to each frame added to your animated GIF. You choose the default color reduction method in 'File->Preferences->Color Reduction Method'.

2. Optimization reduces the size of the whole animated GIF. You apply GIF optimization using 'Animation->Optimize' command sequence.
How can I set the transparent color?
- Click on the frame which contains the color you want to make transparent.
- Click on the box next to the 'Transparent' check box in the 'Frame settings area'.
- Click on the color box you want to make transparent.
- Make sure that the 'Transparent' checkbox on the left is checked.
- To set the selected color transparent in all the frames, click the 'Apply to all' button.
