WinHelp and HtmlHelp

PaperKiller can export all the pages as Rtf for WinHelp and as HtmlHelp (the Microsoft Help file format intended to replace WinHelp). In other words any hypertext file (.aeh), can be instantly converted in a WinHelp (.hlp) file, or in a HtmlHelp (.chm) one.

To create a WinHelp file, choose file >Export pages...? then choose WINHELP (WinHelp Compiler): one file only as format. PK exports, then automatically start the MS Help Compiler (if this is properly installed).

If you do not have this program, click here to download. Once downloaded, double click on it to install. If the link is broken, see the Microsoft Web site or the http://www.paperkiller.com Web site. It is a free utility from Microsoft.

At the end of the compilation, you will obtain a .hlp file that you can deploy with your application.

Links and keywords are the same defined PK. In PK you can also define the table of contents with hypertext >Predefined page order - TOC. Please note that WinHelp capabilities are limited, so you will not see frames, nor animated images and other advanced functions.

Frequently Asked Questions - PaperKiller

  1. Are there any tutorials for main features?
Yes, in the internal manual help, then tutorials.

  2. Can PaperKiller manage frames? And what about the mouseover? The keywords? Can it creat HTML Help? Does it make the coffee...?
The answer is always yes. To learn more, scroll below, see the fast tour, take a deeper look at the online manual, where you'll find all the features, or take a look at the tutorials.

  3. How can I set the size of a page?
You can't set the size of the page, as you can't know what monitor and what window will be used by the people that will see your manual. The safe way is to always use tables (it is the default in PK) and to not assume that the pages have a fixed size.

  4. How can I link to an anchor placed in a different page?
Select the text block you want to link, then insert >Special link? In the dialog that will be shown, do not choose the first tab but one of the others (e.g. second tab formal?, then OK, and select the destination page. Within the preview of that page you can click on the destination Anchor (the number will be copied in the box that on the right at the bottom of the window).

  5. Can I insert an alternate text on a link, like I can do for images?
Select the text and apply the link with "Insert >Special link" (or F5). Then click on the "HTML" tab. In the box insert the following tag: TITLE="insert here the tooltip text". Then click on the first tab and choose any of the link types (for example the second sub-tab, "Normal", then OK).
