Frequently Asked Questions - PC Sound Recorder and Editor
- Can I filter clicks, pop's and noise from a recording?
Not with this software, filtering clicks, pop's and unwanted noises in general is difficult to get right and has mixed results on the rest of the recording, some professional tools do have complex filtering systems.
The Sound Editor does allow you to remove a fragment of sound from the any part of a recording.
You can use this feature to remove really disturbing clicks, or to remove noisy fragments.
The fragment you cut out will be replaced by anything else, so the end result will be that you will hear a jump in the music, this may or may not work for you.
See Cutting out fragments in the help for more information.
- The CD's I create play back on my computer but not on my personal stereo or other players.
The most common reason is that the CD was not created correctly with your CD burning software.
Most CD players require the CD-recording-session to be closed. For more information on creating standard Audio CD's and CD-recording-sessions, please refer to the help manual of your CD-burning software.
Another possibility is that you created a Data CD instead of an Audio CD, A Data CD is not recognized by CD player devices.
Make sure you create an Audio CD and set the option to "close the session" on the CD after write.
- I have no sound output except from your program, why?
The Sound Recorder and Editor both automatically set the volume to the correct amount when it starts, but other programs most times don't do this automatically.
If you don't hear any sound when the Recorder or Editor is not running, then you can manually control the sound channels on your system with the Windows volume controls.
To show the Windows volume controls, either double click on the little yellow speaker icon in the task bar of Windows or go into windows Start / Programs / Accessories / Entertainment / Volume Control and make sure that the volume slider for the Wave channel is not set too low or even muted.
- Can I paste and merge pieces of sound in the Editor?
No.
That is not what the PC Sound Recorder and Editor was designed for, it's primary purpose is to transfer your existing tapes, LP's, Video's onto CD.
Although you can merge sound files with help of the Microsoft Windows Sound Recorder however, this comes free with Microsoft Windows.
You can find the Microsoft Sound Recorder in Windows Start menu / Program files / Accessories / Entertainment.
- My recording contains clicks, pop noises, skips or other glitches/distortions while the original source recording sounds fine. What can be Wrong with the recording?
If your computer is sufficiently equipped (see System requirements in the help), this could be caused by a defect in the sound card hardware, but most likely it is caused by a technical problem in the driver software installed for your sound card.
For the recording process the PC Sound Recorder is totally depending on the quality of the sound card hardware and device driver software installed.
Here are some recommendations and things to check, in order of likeliness that may cause a problem:
- Check to see if there's an update available for the software device driver of your sound card.
Most sound card manufacturers have internet sites where free driver updates can be downloaded and installed, to find out what soundcard you have look in device manager or look in multimedia audio properties.
- Make sure that no other programs/tasks are active on your computer while you are recording.
The activity of other programs/tasks could have a significant impact on the response time of the recording process, causing clicks, short skips and pops.
Do not forget about the tasks sitting in the system tray of Windows. Usually this is where programs like email programs, peer to peer, internet and virus scanners are active. Also, if you have a continuous Internet connection through cable or ADSL for example, disconnecting it whilst you are recording may also help. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL then clicking on Task Manager will show you the list of programs running on your computer.
- Check the hard disk light on your computer.
While recording the hard disk light should blink shortly every 2 to 3 seconds. If the disk light blinks constantly and/or if you constantly hear hard disk activity while you are recording then the speed of your hard disk could be the problem.
What might help then is to de-fragment your hard disk. This can be done with the hard disk de-fragmentation tool that comes with Windows which can be found in Windows Start button / Programs / Accessories / System Tools
If your computer has more than one disk installed, then you may try to select another disk where temporary recordings will be saved. See Temporary files in the help for more information.
- If you experience this problem too often, then please select a lower recording sound quality.
You can append files together in a few simple steps:
- Open the first sound file in the Windows Sound Recorder
- Go to the end of the file
- Click on Edit menu and select 'insert', choose a second sound file to append.
- Repeat these steps to append additional sound files to the end
When you're all done save and then you can load the saved WAV file into PC Sound Editor.
- Why is the disk full so quickly?
Sound files can be extremely large files as they contain a lot of sound information, the higher the quality the more disk space will be needed.
Compact disc quality stereo sound files take up a lot of disk space because they contain the information for two-channel (Left & Right) sound with a frequency of 44100 Hz.
For each second of stereo Compact disc digital sound, you need approximately 176 KB of free disk space, that is approximately 10 megabytes of disk space for each minute.
A new recording will be stored in a temporary file on the hard disk with the most space by default - click on the drive icon to change the temporary space area at any time, In the Sound Recorder window you can see how long a new recording can last in hours : minutes : seconds before the hard disk will be full.
Once you have recorded the sound files on an audio CD, you can of course remove the saved files (Saved in the Editor) from disk.
