DU Meter Glossary

Bandwidth
The maximum transmission speed of a communication device. Usually measured in kilobits per second (kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps). More bandwidth indicates that more data can be transmitted per second. Capacity is sometimes used to refer to bandwidth.

Bit
Binary digIT, a most basic unit of data used by a computer. Every bit can hold one of the two discrete values, 1 and 0. Bits per second are usually used to describe the bandwidth, or capacity of a data communications link.

Bps
Bits Per Second. The most commonly used basic unit to specify the transmission speed of a communication device.

Byte
A unit of data used by computers consists of 8 bits. Usually, the capacities of various devices in a computer system are specified in bytes and their derivatives.

Download (DL)
Process of receiving data from the remote computer to the local PC. Typically, Internet users are downloading most of the time. When you browse the WWW, you are actually downloading the contents of Web pages to your local computer.

kbps
Kilobits per second. Transmission rate unit, 1 kbps is 1000 bps. Kilobyte (Kb) A unit of data, consists of 1024 bytes. Disk and memory capacities are usually specified in kilobytes and megabytes.

Mbps
Megabits per second. Transmission rate unit, 1 Mbps is 1000 kbps, or 1000000 bps.

Megabyte (Mb)
1024 Kilobytes, or 1024*1024=1048576 bytes.

Throughput
The total traffic between network stations (your desktop PC and a remote Internet) per unit of time. DU Meter shows the two directions of data transfer independently.

Upload (UL)
The opposite of download; process of sending data from your local computer to some remote computer on the internet. When you send an e-mail message, you are actually uploading it to the e-mail server.

Frequently Asked Questions - DU Meter

  1. DU Meter does not work on my system. What should I do?
    Check if the networking on your system is properly installed. If everything looks fine but DU Meter still does not work, please send an e-mail with the exact description of the problem and the general info on your system: version, any updates of the operating system installed, type of internet connection, etc.

  2. What DL and UL stand for?
    DL is Download and UL is Upload.
