Frequently Asked Questions - J. River MEDIA CENTER

  1. What TV cards are supported by MEDIA CENTER?
ATI TV cards, including ALL-IN-WONDER, TV-WONDER, TV-WONDER VE, and TV-WONDER USB. Use the latest drivers provided by ATI.

Hauppauge cards, including WinTV PCI and USB boards, excluding WinTV-HD, WinTV-D, and WinTV-PVR. Use latest drivers provided by Hauppauge. However, for WinTV PCI users if your OS is Win98SE, WinME, Win2000, and WinXp, it is recommended that you use WDM driver available from Hauppauge site.

Pinnacle Systems Studio PCTV/PCTV PRO cards. You need to download WDM driver from here.

BT8xx based TV cards made by other manufactures may also work. You need to try it out. If the manufacturer of your BT8xx chipset cards does not provide a WDM driver, you can try the generic WDM driver.

Cards reported to work with MC by end users (but not tested by J. River):
    I/OMagic tv card.

  2. Why do certain file formats seem to skip or pop more often than others?
Click Settings>Plug-in Manager, double-click "Input" and click on the particular file format that is giving you problems. Now click "Configure." If the configuration dialog has a priority slider bar, increase the priority. For example, if the CD Read Priority is set to "Normal," set it to "Higher" or "Highest".

If that does not work, select Settings>Options>CD Settings and uncheck 3Use Digital Playback."

  3. How can I get the volume control slider to work properly?
If the volume control slider on MEDIA CENTER is functioning incorrectly, try re-installing the latest drivers for your sound card. These are usually available from the card manufacturer's Website.

  4. How do I rip a CD in MEDIA CENTER?
Insert a disk to rip and click on "CD, DVD & Handhelds" in the Organization Tree of MEDIA CENTER. If "Enable on-line CD lookup" is checked (and you are connected to the Internet), MEDIA CENTER will access it and a list of track names will appear. Now click on the "Rip CD" button on the toolbar or select Tools>Copy (Rip) CD. Alternatively you can select the tracks you want to copy and right-click on the selected file, then choose "Copy (Rip CD)..." from the pop-up menu.

  5. Why can't I play .ra, .ram, .rm, .rmj, .rmm, .rmx, .rp, or .rv files?
Make sure you have RealPlayer 6+ installed.

  6. When I try to burn a CD, everything goes fine for a while, but an error message eventually appears before MEDIA CENTER completes the burning, why?
This can happen on older drives that don't have the "Burn Proof" feature. Most drives of 12X speed and above have this feature. If you have an older drive, try a lower burning speed. For example, if you have an 8X drive, try burning at 4X or even 2X. Also avoid doing anything else on the computer while the burn is taking place and turn off screen savers and virus checkers. To avoid ruining CD's during your testing process, enable the "test mode" option.

  7. I have deleted some files on my PC. Is there an easy way to update my Media Library in MC to reflect these changes?
Select File> Library> Update Library... and check the 'Remove files which do not exist' box. Then click 'Update'. This will remove the files in MEDIA CENTER that are no longer found on your hard disk.

  8. I burned an audio CD and didn't receive any errors, but the CD I created isn't recognized by my computer or another CD player. why?
Make sure "Test mode" (Settings>Options>CD Writer Settings) is not enabled. If this is enabled, MEDIA CENTER will go through the entire burn process to make sure everything is working, but no data is written to a CD.

Also, depending upon your computer, some CD-R brands work better than others. Try a different brand.

There are some CD players which are simply unable to read a "burned" CD.
