Convert Documents

Documents can be converted in one of four ways:

1) Printing from the application

Open your application and go through the same steps you would normally perform to print a document but select Reporter from the printer list instead of your normal printer. Click OK to print and Reporter will begin converting your document.

If your application supports drag-and-drop printing, then you can also use the following methods.

2) The right-click file menu

Reporter is also available from the Windows Explorer right-click or "context" popup menu. Just right-click on a document and select "Aurelia Reporter" from the popup menu.

3) Directly from the Reporter shell program

Open the Reporter application from the programs menu or by clicking on the desktop shortcut. Click File/Convert and select one or more documents to convert.

4) Using a command line

With this method, advanced users can automatically convert one or more files and specify custom output options for each. Command line syntax can be found here.

Frequently Asked Questions - Reporter

  1. Q: Why would I use Reporter when the programs I use already allow me to save as HTML?
A: Except in the case of very simple documents, applications that allow you to save as a web page typically do a very poor job of retaining the original document layout. For example, here's the HTML rendition of our MS-Word sample as created by Office 2000 professional edition, compared with the Reporter version.

  2. Q: What browsers are supported by Reporter?
A: Reporter works with versions 4 and higher of Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera Software's Opera browser, and any other browser that supports the required minimum subset of HTML/CSS. At the time of this writing these browsers comprise roughly 99% of worldwide browser usage. Since Reporter uses only generic, nonproprietary tags, Reporter output will be compatible with all future browsers that support the HTML/CSS standard as defined by the W3C.

  3. Q: What mail clients does it support?
A: Reporter contains its own built-in mail client so it doesn't need an external mail client to send HTML e-mail, however it can use your Outlook, Outlook Express, or Eudora mail client if available.

  4. Q: What graphic types are supported?
A: Simple line-art and geometric shapes are stored in the widely supported Portable Network Graphics (PNG) format since this works extremely well for simple, high-contrast images. Photographic images are stored in JPEG format since this works better for high-color images.

  5. Q: How are multi-page documents handled?
A: Pages can be either concatenated into a single, long, HTML document or rendered into separate HTML pages, in which case Reporter generates Next/Previous links allowing the user to move from page to page.
