Frequently Asked Questions - ReadPal

  1. How do I optimize my reading speed?

The Banner and Sentence reading modes will allow you to read more rapdily than the Column reader. You set the pace and just keep up. This prevents the normal slowing in speed that happens as people progress through a large document. It also prevents the slowing in reading speed that happens when the words being read are in a large area of text. Experiments using eye-tracking technology show that the eyes often loose their reading position, backtrack and reread words already read. The eyes are also more likely to lose position in a large block of dense text.

The most efficient way to read using the Banner is to set the number of words per screen that you can absorb in a single glace or focus. E.g. if two words per screen are displayed your eyes should be able to take in both words together, not read the first word and then the second. Increase the speed until you find it difficult to keep up. In order to make a good 'retinal imprint', (a clear image in the eye), about 250ms is typically needed. This will equate to 3 or 4 screens per second. As you progress beyond four screens per second people generally find it easier to display more words per screen, at a slower pace.

  2. What are Text Handling Rules?

ReadPal uses a sophisticated set of rules to determine how words are presented to you. This program have set the default to be suitable for the types of documents most commonly used. However, you may have special needs and you can customize them through the Options menu. Note: All of the text handling rules are explained fully in ReadPal's Help file. Press F1 while using ReadPal.

  3. Will I actually read quicker with ReadPal software?

Yes, ReadPal's testing suggests you will be able to read long text documents 30% faster using ReadPal.

  4. What is the best way to read very long documents?

This depends on the type of reading you are doing. If you are reading a novel for fun and relaxation the Sentence Reader or Column Reader are probably the best reading modes. You should have the font large, (>18), with your favorite color combination. Press v for the Full Screen view.

To master or study a given document the approach should differ. The following three stage approach is fast and will improve your recall of the document:
    1. Preview. A rapid preview using the Banner Mode of reading and with AutoSkim at low levels, (10-30%).
    2. In depth reading of the document. The indepth reading is best carried out with the Banner or Sentence Modes of reading.
    3. Review, at high speed, using AutoSkim at high levels.

  5. What is the optimal formatting for your eyes?

With ReadPal you set the format to suit your eyes and way of reading. Then you can read anything your favourite way, no matter how the original document was formatted. No need to reformat for every document!
You will find the format menu in the main menu system. A full explanation is in the manual which may be downloaded for free.
    Some Formatting Tips:
    • When using ReadPal just press v to read in the Full Screen View. This reduces glare and removes distractions to your reading.
    • When in the Banner Mode it is easier to read with the Alignment Center. In the Column Mode it is easier to read with the Alignment Left.
    • Wide Columns look better, however, most people can read narrow columns more quickly. The reason for this is that the wider the column the more likely it is that the eyes will 'get lost'.
    • The Column Mode of reading is more suited to documents that are very heavily formatted
